Within Plymouth School of Aikido, we have a tradition of placing our names or initials on our belts and the year we were awarded the grade. As we grade we recycle the belts back into the club stock for the next student. It becomes a matter of pride for a person to have a belt with several previous owners who are their seniors and possibly now Dan grades. This tradition provides continuity in the club and gives a strong sense of belonging to students and a timely reminder to us older folk of where we came from.
